Welsh Language Statement

The Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 established a legal framework to impose a statutory duty on public bodies in Wales to comply with standards of conduct on the Welsh language. It recognised that there are two official languages in Wales- Welsh and English. This means Welsh must be treated no less favourably than English.

The standards aim to improve the bilingual service that the people of Wales can expect to receive from organisations in Wales. The University is committed to making a positive contribution to the development of the Welsh language and to adhering to the Welsh Language standards. This page outlines some of the services you can expect to receive from us in Welsh.

As part of our commitment to the Welsh standards we will:

  • Treat the Welsh language no less favourably than the English language.
  • Encourage Welsh speakers to take advantage of the services they have the right to receive from us in Welsh.
  • Facilitate the use of Welsh on the campus.
  • Support members of staff who require assistance with the Welsh language.

The services Welsh speakers can expect from us

  • We welcome correspondence and telephone enquiries in Welsh and will ensure that all correspondence received by the University in Welsh receives a reply in Welsh. Writing to us in Welsh will not lead to a delay in responding.
  • All the web pages will be available in Welsh and English.

The ability to view pages in Welsh

On all pages on this LibGuides site, in the top right corner of your screen, you will see a 'Cymraeg' button (unless the page is bilingual, in which case, Welsh and English will be displayed on the same page), which allows you to toggle the current page you are viewing into Welsh.

Please Note: We have tried to ensure that after clicking this language toggle button, you will remain within a Welsh interface, however, due to the nature of the implementation being custom built (and not natively supported by the LibGuides platform), we can only apologise if the page you visit next returns to English.
Hint: If your language does change back to English, please contact us and let us know which page this occurs on including a link to the page, and we will work on a fix as soon as we can. (However, please read the important note below this message before you contact us please)
IMPORTANT NOTE: The language toggle will NOT remember your settings, next time you visit the page, you WILL need to change your language manually, as this is simply a 'toggle' and not a 'preference', once again due to the limited support by the platform which is out of our control.
