Checking your work

Checking your work

Turnitin Version

Hint: Use this to change the instructions for the version of Turnitin you are using (it will save your setting automatically)

Introduction

Before you submit the final version of your assignment, it is always recommended to check your work with the similarity checker.

This is a safe space where you can submit your file without the worry of it being submitted to Turnitin's Database, potentially risking you receiving 100%.

Note: When using the similarity checker, you will be able to submit to Turnitin 3 times within a 24-hour period. Turnitin will alert you just before you submit your 'last' attempt within the 24-hour period and also tell you if you can't upload any more for that period of time.

To check your work, you will need to visit the similarity checker that is available on all of your modules, if you're unsure on how to do this, please follow the steps below.

Submitting to the Similarity checker.

First, log on to the MyUni Portal and click the Moodle tile.

On Moodle head to the module directly and scroll down to the 'Assessment and Feedback' section, then, click on the 'Assessment Information' book.

Hint: If you are unsure about navigating Moodle, please see our separate guidance on navigating Moodle.

After clicking on the book click on 'Chapter 3. Check your own work' listed in the Table of Contents to the right.

Hint: If you don't see a 'Table of Contents' on the right, click on the 'Open Block Drawer' button, to display the 'Table of Contents'.

After Chapter 3 has loaded, click the 'Test Submission Point' link to access the Turnitin similarity checker.

When the page and Turnitin has loaded, if it is your first time using the tool, you will need to scroll to the bottom of the License Agreement and then click 'Accept'.

The page will then refresh, and allow you to submit your files.

Submitting a file

Now that you have access to Turnitin, click the 'Browse Files' button at the bottom of the screen.

When the file dialog loads, locate your assignment, select it, and then click 'Open' (or double-click the file).

Check that a submission title has been added, (if not, type in a name manually), and then click 'Upload and Preview'.

Turnitin will then process your file and generate a preview. You may need to wait for this process to complete before you can submit.

Hint: If Turnitin is taking a while to process your preview, it will provide you with the chance to still submit your file, however, it is still recommended to wait for the preview to load.

Note: It is strongly recommended that you check your file before you click submit to make sure you have uploaded the correct file.

When the file has finished processing, you will be able to navigate through your upload before submitting.

Hint: Use the scrollbar on the right to scroll through the contents of your page, and then use the left and right arrows to switch between your pages.

Note: If the file you have selected is NOT the correct file, click the 'Cancel' button and follow the steps above again to upload a different file.

After you have checked over the document and confirmed you have uploaded the correct document, click 'Submit'.

You will then receive a message that says 'Your file was successfully uploaded.'

Your file will then be visible in the 'Your Work' area.

If you don't see a similarity score yet, refresh your web page by either pressing 'F5' (or sometimes Fn + F5 on Laptops), or by clicking the 'Refresh' button, which will usually be in the top left of your browser. (It will usually look like an arrow rotated in a circle to the right: )

Hint: If the score still isn't visible, please wait a bit longer and try to refresh again. (Larger files with lots of text may take longer to process).

Your similarity score will be displayed in the middle.

Your file has now been submitted to Turnitin. For information about the similarity scores, please see our separate page on this information.

Note: Where the documentation provided below will only refer to submitting to the final submission point, the steps to submit to the similarity checker are the same.
