At university you will be expected to take responsibility for your own learning – to become an independent learner. This will involve developing key skills including time management and organisational skills, effective reading and note taking, and understanding the requirements of academic study. These pages provide support and guidance on all aspects of academic study.
Searching online
We are all familiar with searching for information online, and most of us use Google. It is quick and easy to use, and a useful platform for finding information, especially Government documents and official reports.
There is nothing wrong with using it, however, Google often provides results based on what it thinks you are looking for. The results you get from a search may be based on your location and previous searches, and also how Google ranks its results. To improve your search results on Google try using the advanced search options.
If you are searching for academic information you could try using the Library Catalogue - Resource Finder, or Google Scholar.
Google Scholar
Google Scholar is freely available search engine that allows you to search for academic literature online. You can search for journal articles, books and other resources. Google Scholar searches a smaller part of the Internet, searching specifically for academic resources and scholarly publications.
Note that you may not get free full text access to all the resources listed in the results.
LibKey Nomad
LibKey Nomad is a free browser extension that allows you to access our library resources whilst searching online.
Once the extension is installed LibKey Nomad will connect you to the article if it is available through Wrexham University's subscrptions, or alert you to open access content. More information can be found in LibKey Nomad video
