Navigating the Moodle Dashboard

The Dashboard is split into 3 different sections, the 'Timeline', 'Recently Accessed Courses', and the 'Course Overview'.

The 'Timeline' will display a list of any upcoming assignments or quizzes / exams, and they will be displayed in chronological order (e.g., 4th August 2025, 8th August 2025, 12th August 2025).

Note: By default, your timeline will display the 'Next 7 days' of upcoming activities. To provide you with more time to see upcoming activities, click the 'Next 7 days' dropdown and change it to the 'Next 30 days'.

The 'Recently Accessed Courses' will visually display three recently clicked on modules at a time, with more being visible by clicking the left and right navigation arrows in the top-right of the recently accessed courses.

Note: If you have just accessed Moodle for the first time and haven't clicked on any modules yet, this section will be empty.

The 'Course Overview' will display all of the modules you are enrolled on. These will by default display in an A-Z and 1-9 order, which means it will display modules in both alphabetical and numerical order.

To avoid confusion (and to keep your recently used modules at the top), click the dropdown above the courses that says 'Sort by course name', and change it to 'Sort by last accessed'.

This means that if you're frequently accessing modules for the current academic year, they will appear at the top (depending on when you clicked on them).

Hint: If you can't see / find new modules for the current year, see our separate guidance on this topic.

Navigating a module page

From either the course overview or the recently accessed courses section, click on a module to access the content on that page.

When the module loads, you will find the course split up into multiple sections. 'General' (which contains the 'Course Information'), 'Assessment and Feedback', and the individual week-by-week content ('Week 1', 'Week 2', etc.).

On a course page, you will find a variety of content including:

  •  Files when clicked on will automatically download to your computer where you can open them in their respective program. PDF files will open in your web browser directly.
    •  Note: You will in most cases need the Office 365 desktop apps installed to view Word Documents and PowerPoints, which you have access to for free as students. This is only available for Windows and Mac, and you can view our install guides if you are not sure how to install them.

  •  Folders can be clicked on to view the content, and the content itself can be clicked on, where it will either download or open in your web browser.

  •  Books contain multiple chapters, sometimes with sub-chapters, and contain a combination of text, links, file downloads, and / or videos. You can navigate using the Left and Right arrows, or by opening the block drawer to view the table of contents.

  •  Links can be clicked on to visit different webpages that your lecturer would have configured.

  •  Videos may either be visible on the page, or may require clicking a link to view the video. The videos are uploaded to 'Panopto', which you may have to use for some of your assignments.

  •  Quizzes may be used for quick assessments or full exams and will contain a variety of question types ranging from multiple choice to true or false questions.

  •  Submission Points are available in three formats, a 'Moodle' assignment, a 'Turnitin' assignment, or a 'Panopto' assignment. Your lecturer will inform you what type of assignment you will need to submit to, and what files need to be submitted.

Course Index and Block Drawer

On the left side of Moodle, you may see the 'Course Index'. If you don't, click the Teal button on the left to open the 'Course Index'.

The 'Course Index' can be used to quickly navigate to any of the sections and activities within your module, and (if enabled) you will see a combination of green and black dots indicating if an activity has been completed or not respectively.

Each of the sections can be either collapsed or expanded by clicking the arrow to the left of the header.
All sections can be expanded or collapsed with one click by navigating to the three horizontal dots and either clicking 'Expand All' or 'Collapse All'.

On the right side of Moodle, you may see the 'Block Drawer'. If you don't, click the Teal button on the right to open the 'Block Drawer'.

The 'Block Drawer' may display your course contacts, how to get in contact with IT, and will also display a table of contents when viewing a book.

Both the Course Index and Block Drawer can be closed by pressing the 'x' button in the top left and the top right of each dialog respectively.

Locating Assignments

On Moodle, head to your module page, and scroll down to the 'Assessment and Feedback' section. You will find the 'Assessment Information' book which contains your module handbook and the draft Turnitin submission point. Further down the page, you will find your final assignment submission points.
